Advantages of being a gal

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Mr Boyfriend sent me an email today to let me know how lucky i am to be a gal……… ;o and i so have to agree………..

Why its better to be a woman!

1. We got off the Titanic first.

2. We get to flirt with systems support men who always return our calls, and
are nice to us when we blow up our computers.

3. Our boyfriend’s clothes make us look elfin & gorgeous. Guys look like
complete idiots in ours.

4. We can be groupies. Male groupies are stalkers.

5. We can cry and get off speeding fines.

6. We’ve never lusted after a cartoon character or the central female figure
in a computer game.

7. Taxis stop for us.

8. Men die earlier, so we get to cash in on the life insurance.

9. We don’t look like a frog in a blender when dancing.

10. Free drinks, Free dinners, Free movies … (you get the point).

11. We can hug our friends without wondering if she thinks we’re gay.

12. We can hug our friends without wondering if WE’RE gay.

13. New lipstick gives us a whole new lease on life.

14. It’s possible to live our whole lives without ever taking a group
shower.

15. We don’t have to fart to amuse ourselves.

16. If we forget to shave, no one has to know.

17. We can congratulate our team-mate without ever touching her butt.

18. If we have a zit, we know how to conceal it.

19. We never have to reach down every so often to make sure our privates are
still there.

20. If we’re dumb, some people will find it cute.

21. We don’t have to memorize Caddyshack or Fletch to fit in.

22. We have the ability to dress ourselves.

23. We can talk to people of the opposite sex without having to picture them
naked.

24. If we marry someone 20 years younger, we’re aware that we look like an
idiot.

25. Our friends won’t think we’re weird if we ask whether there’s spinach in
our teeth.

26. There are times when chocolate really can solve all your problems.

27. We’ll never regret piercing our ears.

28. We can fully assess a person just by looking at their shoes.

29. We know which glass was ours by the lipstick mark.

30. We have enough sense to realize that the easiest way to get out of being
lost is to ask for directions.

p/s: i hope boys REALLY don’t do #23. And i REALLY always do #28, #13 and #2.

A Relationship Hangover

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Although you have moved on with your own life with new people, theres one thing that keeps you really bogged down and horribly reminded with the fact that you had good times with other old friends and special ones. PICTURES.

And you’re horribly reminded because you miss those times or that special one so much although you both have moved on- perfectly - with life and what tails along with it.

Then you began asking questions like- why did it happen? shit happens. what do i have now?  everything under the sun. do i like what i have now?  a hundred percent. would i jump onto a time machine and go back to the past? not in a million light years.

But then, why do i feel like i just hit rock-bottom? because i saw THAT picture.

And it reminded me of the times i had, the conversations, the smile, laughter, emotions, feelings, anxiety, dreams, goals, sacrifices……. and what it made me today.

The relationship you would miss the most would not be the one where things were smoothsailing and you had each other to hang on to…. but it would be the one where everything was impossible but you still really really tried.

And for that, Abdulla Al-Attas holds a page to a bittersweet memory of my book of love.

And though life intended us to part and move ahead with our own footsteps, it was not just because we weren’t meant to be, but because we were meant to meet and learn from that meeting, then move ahead and inspire others the way we have inspired ourselves from the little time we had shared together.

And for that, Saudi Arabia will always have a special place in my heart, even during desert storms.

A Malaysian Journey

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

Ever since i started my career in this stinky car factory, i’ve been blessed with the opportunity to tour Malaysia- something i lack of ever since uni started.

I’ve only been working for a mere 11 months, but i went to places in our beautiful green country- and fell in love with Malaysia all over again. Havin’ no kampung of my own, i am a sucker for friendly beaches and kampung houses. I will gawk at the sight of padi fields and small brown lambs running around it.

Sarawak was gorgeous, with many big roundabouts and cute cat statues. Langkawi was a given place for a perfect honeymoon. Kelantan was breezy, with the best soup gearbox. Cherating was a long break away from the city and a life by the sea. Terengganu…… the best keropok lekor.

I’m travelling to Terengganu again tomorrow.

again, it makes me feel so proud and happy to be a Malaysian.

Of Weddings and Wishes

Friday, September 16th, 2005

I got home earlier than normal today, and managed to switch on mtv to Britney and Kevin’s - Chaotic. The reality show previewing their pre-wedding and post-wedding happening, and especially, what really happened when they were tying the knot. Amazingly, it was actually a surprised engagement-cum-wedding reception, with lots of people appalled and crying because it was oh-so-ever so sweet. A mixture of roses and white gowns. Britney looked really good. Its either that or i’m just bias because i really really like her despite the fact she is undeniably a complete dumb blonde. I hate bimbos, but she is an exception because she works for her own money and thats a very important skill in life.

Anyway, looking at her wedding made me imagine about one of my own. How would it be? What would i look like? The most beautiful bride i’ve seen so far is my good friend Suhana who looked like the most gorgeous angel ever. She gave her hubby goosebumps, i think.

Well, not trying to sound like a complete brat, but my wedding will be officially done "my way". Which highly means… everything "Indian". Indian Food. Briyani from Madras. Ghee. Sari beaded cloth for my attire. Kurta for the guy. (even if he will not look good in one). A nose ring for me. Yes, i will pierce my nose again. Lots of sparkles and glitz. A ’sari’ wearing nite for me and all my close girlfriends who are of a subcontinent background. Nice, romantic, sentimental songs. And some hindi tunes. Bright colours instead of pastel shades.

A big rock. Yup, that shall complete it just fine.

2005 so far

Friday, September 16th, 2005

A long-lost friend met up with me by the street two hours ago and asked: "So, what have you been up to since we last met?"

Well, dearie…. life, is a story to tell. 2005 had soooo much to offer. And we are only mid-way….

  • Joined the workforce. A big leap from uni days. A jump into the adults world. No more hipsters to class, but tweed jackets and suits to office instead. No more examinations, but i so will be examined in the Board meeting! No more lepak at cute dinky coffee shops in between classes, but i get a constant satisfying paycheck everymonth.
  • Bought my own wheels. Feels like a man, getting infatuated with my own car. Spends more money on her polish rather than facials for myself. Have never ever been for facial coz’ her paint is more important to look good than my oily face that needs blotters every 4 hours.
  • Deprived of my abaya/jubah wearing days. In UIA, wearing those cloaks means you’re "nie/holy/is islamically concious/will attract a lot of cute arab dudes/is a potential ‘good wife’ material" or just plain lazy to dress up for class. In the corporate world, wearing it to work means you are a lost terrorist wannabe.
  • Got my first credit cards. And of course, indulged in many many beautiful things a girl must-have. That Zara coat. That MAC eyeliner. That Aldo shoes. That Indian sari. And, forgot all about poverty in Somalia and the suffering Afghans. Not for long, i hope.
  • Parted with foreign affair bf with a good peace-settlement; no negotiations, no ceasefire; no uproar…. just diplomatic agreement, the democratic way.
  • Dated a psycho for a week due to my rebound ‘unconcious mode’. He’s in a mental asylum now, while i was given political asylum by a group called We Love Sane People and Hate The Psychotics Association.
  • A lifetime-partnership proposal from a dude who’s in the no.1 uni in the world. Very flattering, but intimidating. I might not win all the arguments now if he is this smart. Thus, brushing up my debating and negotiating skills, along with reading the profile of Mahathirism- to learn on how to become a real benevolent dictator.
  • Started a Masters program- in Literature. Theres nothing better than another Degree in Liberal Arts to understand this cruel, cruel world.
  • Bought my mum a RM 1,600 diamond ring from Selberan. The so-called best diamond shop in the country. Yeah, right. More like the break-my-wallet diamond shop in the country. Feels like a good daughter, but also like a foolosh pauper at times.
  • Had my university convocation. The best celebration in my life so far. Felt liberated and educated, and like they say in cosmetic ads- "worth it".
  • Fallen in love, over and over again, every single day, every single second- with my cat Snowy.

15 things i cannot live without

Friday, September 16th, 2005

Frankly, there are 15 things that i cannot live without:

1. My cat snowy a.k.a. The Love of My Life, and by far, the most important "person" in my life.

2. My Gen-2- my passport to "anywhere" under the sun.

3. My Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner- makes me look 10 times more evil. i think.

4. My Pajama pants bought from Tesco- so comfy, i can wear it for weeks and not wash it.

5. My dirty rubber Vincci driving slippers- the best grip on the accelerator to do an F1.

6. My Mak Datin sunglasses- for my prevention of migraine due to very hot sun.

7. My SmartTag- to speed even at the tolls. Especially at tolls.

8. My nasyid CD collection- for the days i feel like feelin’ holy and felt that life is only temporary.

9. My Rod Stewart CD- the song "Forever Young" is my national anthem.

10. My favourite black-sequinned tarhah- for fast head-covering act.

11. My commitment ring from mr boyfriend- to remind me that i’m in a "real" relationship.

12. My boyfriend’s supplementary credit card- to take revenge whenever he misbehaved.

13. My low-waisted Levi’s- works for everybody, so as for me.

14. My Indian shawl- keeps me grounded about my subcontinent roots, and warm on chilly days.

15. My Indonesian maid- Mekcik Saripah!- God, i really can’t lose her.

Lonely

Friday, September 16th, 2005

what do you do when you get lonely?

give a phonecall? a different time zone makes that complicated.

sms? only lasts a few seconds.

emails? you tend to over-write. sometimes will transmit the wrong message and this might cause a spur.

well, for me, and only me, the unfortunate me, perhaps this will help.

and frankly, i think it does ;o

Our Third World Mentality

Friday, September 16th, 2005

Lets leave this crappy nation and move to a better land. Where streetlights are never not enough. Where shopping malls make Prada look affordable. Where people shop at hig-end shops because they can afford it. Poverty are hidden behind closed walls or behind the Presidents’ coats. A place where racism exists but nobody knows. The grass is always greener on the other side.

Yup, sad but true, this is our third-world mentality. A recent blog that i read inspired me to attack such a mentality. Always wanting to go to a better place just because Malaysia does not seem to be giving enough. Really really sad.

For me, the future is here. I would still go and study in a white man’s land though, but the future is here. I do have respect for the white man’s land though, but only of a degree that they deserve, never with awe, never wanting to migrate there just because their sandwiches taste better.

Why the infatuation in a land where you will always and always be treated as a second class citizen?

Malaysians can be so shallow. Never the urge to think further. Deeper.

If we all leave, what happens to the generation after us?

The world is ours; its yours and its mine.
